About Dâna,
The teachings of the Buddha (dharma) are given freely. In return, students of the dharma are invited to show their appreciation of the teachings, and the impact they have in their lives, in the form of donations, given freely and with generosity. This is known as dana, which is a Pali word meaning the practice of generosity or giving. It is dana which contributes towards covering the expenses (eg, rent, travel) which are incurred in teaching the dharma through this Sangha.
Retreats
For retreats, registration fees are charged to cover actual fixed costs such as food and accommodation, and participants are invited to donate dana to show their appreciation of the teachings and contribute towards the living expenses of their teachers.
People are often anxious about how much to give as dana. Jason Siff, one of our teachers, offers the following guidance which demonstrates the importance of balancing generosity with wisdom:

Whenever you feel gratitude for this approach to meditation and its effect on your life, please remember us. While the feeling is still alive, please make a donation. If you have an amount in mind that works for you, please give that much. If you want to give more than you can afford, try giving half that. If you are shy about giving and consider only sending a small amount, try giving twice that. Your gift will most likely be the appropriate amount for whatever service, guidance or knowledge you have received. It will be honoured and appreciated by us. ... Your gift from your heart means so much to us, why would we disrespect it with greed for more.
Our greatest hope is that you continue with your meditation practice. That is truly the gift of the Dharma.

The Coast and City Sangha
The Coast and City Sangha operates entirely on donations. As our Sangha is growing so too are some of the hidden costs associated with its operation. In the past many of these expenses have been absorbed, often by the teachers or retreat organisers.
We aim to keep retreat registration fees as low as possible. These fees contribute to, but often do not cover all of, the costs associated with:

We aim to keep retreat registration fees as low as possible. These fees contribute to, but often do not cover all of, the costs associated with:
- increasing air travel and per diem expenses of visiting teachers,
- increasing rental costs for retreat/workshop facilities, public liability insurance etc.
- offering reduced-fee registration to those who need financial support to attend retreats or workshops.
With your support and generosity we hope to:
- keep the meditation retreats affordable, and
- continue offering registration fee assistance to those who would otherwise be prevented from attending our meditation retreats
- offer free attendance at non-residential retreats/workshops for young meditators (under 18 year olds).
