About Dâna,

The teachings of the Buddha (dharma) are given freely.  In return, students of the dharma are invited to show their appreciation of the teachings, and the impact they have in their lives, in the form of donations, given freely and with generosity.  This is known as dâna, which is a Pali word meaning the practice of generosity or giving.  It is dâna which contributes towards covering the time and expenses (e.g., rent, travel) which are incurred in teaching the dharma through this Sangha.

Retreats

For retreats, registration fees are charged to only cover the actual fixed costs of food, insurance and accommodation. Therefore, participants are invited to donate dâna to show their appreciation of the teachings and contribute towards the living expenses of their teachers.

People are often anxious about how much to give as dâna. In Reflective Meditation, the emphasis is on the importance of balancing care with wisdom, this balance is needed regarding the generosity of your giving of dâna. So please pause to consider; what you have learned during your retreat, the time / care / experience of your teachers, and pay what feels workable for you to reflect your gratitude and your capacity in this moment of time.

Our greatest hope is that you continue with your dharma practice, both in meditation and in everyday life – this is the generosity of the gift of the Buddha’s teaching.

The Coast and City Sangha

The Coast and City Sangha operates entirely on donations. As our Sangha is growing so too are some of the hidden costs associated with its operation. In the past many of these expenses have been absorbed, often by the teachers or retreat organisers.

We aim to keep retreat registration fees as low as possible. These fees contribute to, but often do not cover all of, the costs associated such as; offering reduced-fee registration to those who need financial support to attend retreats.

With your support and generosity we hope to:
  • keep the meditation retreats affordable, and
  • continue offering registration fee assistance to those who would otherwise be prevented from attending our meditation retreats
  • offer free attendance at non-residential retreats/workshops for young meditators (under 18 year olds).

The teachings provided by our teachers Anna Markey and Tina Gibson, in person and through our website, are given freely in accordance with Buddhist tradition. To continue to do this they rely on the generosity and gratitude of students.

If you wish to donate to our teachers or to support Coast and City Sangha, please email [email protected] for details.

Generosity, or dâna, is a foundation practice of the Buddha's path of liberation.
