Reflective Meditation
|
Reflective Meditation evolved in the U.S.A. as a secular expression of the Insight (Vipassana) tradition, grounded in early Buddhist teachings and informed by Western psychology.
The Buddha’s teachings on dependant arising underpin this approach. Reflective Meditation is an effective way to explore, experiment and learn through looking into our experience. Through understanding and care towards our inner and outer world, we grow in the dharma and in life. It encourages meditators to include the full range of their inner experience: thoughts, emotions, sensations, and bodily awareness within a receptive kind and curious attention. After each meditation, practitioners take time to reflect and journal, describing what unfolded and the process of meditation itself. Through gentle dialogue with teachers and peers, these reflections become a shared inquiry that deepens understanding, compassion, and ethical clarity. This integrative approach supports a meditation practice that is both personally meaningful and grounded in everyday realities. |
Our Teachers
Anna Markey was introduced to Buddhist practice in India in 1983. She took teachings from a variety of Tibetan teachers and attended retreats there with insight teacher, Christopher Titmuss, the same year. She has practised insight meditation ever since. Anna also practised for a number of years with a Zen group in the tradition of Thich Nhat Hanh, in the Burmese Mahasi method of practice with Patrick Kearney and also within the Recollective Awareness approach with Jason Siff. She now teaches reflective meditation in collaboration with a cohort of teachers in the states and Australia. Anna is interested in using this gentle, wise and transformative approach to dharma to develop one’s relationship to our world in ways to foster resilience in the face of change and to foster an activist life in response to the polycrisis we are now facing.
